Care & Repair

How to Care for Your Clothes

Most of the life of a garment happens between washes. Hang a linen shirt overnight and the worst of the crease drops out. Brush a wool coat instead of sending it to the cleaner after every wear. Fold knits rather than hanging them, so the shoulder keeps its shape.

Wash less, and wash cold when you do. Turn a shirt inside out. Skip the dryer for linen and wool; heat is what shortens a cloth. A steamer, or a damp cloth and a press, is enough for a collar that needs to look decided.

Repair is part of the same idea. A loose button, a hem that has walked, a small hole at a pocket — those are fixes, not reasons to retire a piece. A garment that can be mended is the one worth buying.
